Stadios Mansion

A luxurious residence from the Late Roman period (3rd–4th centuries CE) situated within a city block surrounded by streets. It was built on the remains of earlier Hellenistic houses. Through the central northern entrance, one enters the courtyard work area and the small peristyle (impluvium), and from there proceeds to the formal rooms, the andron and the large dining hall (triclinium) with the two bedrooms (cubicula) to its west.

The covered mosaic floor of the andron is decorated with the mythological scene of the dying god Adonis accompanied by the goddess Aphrodite. A smaller figure kisses the god’s hand. The scene depicts the wild boar that wounded the young god, the bandaged wound, and the red anemones that sprang from his blood, as recounted by Biões of Smyrna and Ovid.
