ANCIENT MESSENE: MONUMENTS BEFORE AND AFTER RESTORATION—STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT
The key feature that characterizes ancient Messene and distinguishes it from other important archaeological sites is the element of evolution, gradual uncovering, reconstruction, and enhancement. Most of the monuments were created from scratch. Their form was reconstructed using stone piles.
