Archaeological Site of Ancient Messene

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., a memorial service will be held at the archaeological site of ancient Messene in memory of the late Professor Petros G. Themelis, who served as director of the excavation and restoration project at ancient Messene for thirty-eight years. This will be followed by the unveiling of his bust by Ms. Louiza Anastopoulou and the Regional Governor of the Peloponnese, Mr. Dimitris Ptochos at the entrance to the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Messene. The bust is a donation from Takis Anastopoulos and was crafted by sculptor Theodoros Papagiannis, an honorary professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts. At the end of the event, a buffet dinner will be served in the garden of the Archaeological Museum.

The event is organized by the Society for Messinian Archaeological Studies (EMAS), which was founded by the late professor and has, for thirty years, made a decisive contribution to the excavation and restoration work, as well as to the preservation, conservation, and promotion of the archaeological site of ancient Messene and its monuments.
